Apple iPhone 7 Announced, Stays True to Rumors and Leaks

The much awaited iPhone 7 was announced yesterday after months of rumors and leaks. The design is almost identical to last year’s iPhone 6s and much hasn’t changed. The few changes made to the body include repositioned antennae lines, absence of the 3.5mm audio jack and a new home button.

The phone has a brand new processor, a better display and an improved camera. Nintendo also came on stage to demonstrate the new Super Mario Run coming to iOS.

Form Factor

Staying true to what we saw before the device got released, this looks like an improved iPhone 6s. The device comes in two sizes: a 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and a bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus. The form factor is almost the same as the iPhone 6s but a few things have changed.

Apple finally got rid of the 3.5mm audio jack to introduce a wireless AirPod. However, the iPhone 7 is still going to ship with a wired EarPod that connects through the Lightning port.

The iPhone now sports stereo speakers with one placed at the top and the other at the bottom. The device comes in 5 colors: Silver, Gold, Rose Gold, Black and Jet Black. The announced devices are water-resistant with IP67 rating.

Display

Both models retain the same display sizes and resolutions on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Still, there’s no OLED display and there’s no 2k display on the iPhone, but Apple claims the display is actually much better than what was on the last iPhone.

Apple iPhone 7 comes with a 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD display with 1334 x 750 px resolution. The pixel density is 326 ppi and there’s a 65.6% screen-to-body ratio. The iPhone 7 Plus on the other hand as a 5.5-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD, 1920 x 1080 px resolution, 401 ppi display density and a 67.7% screen-to-body ratio.

Apple also announced a wider (P3) colour gamut and improved colour management which should make images taken with the camera look more vivid.

Performance

As expected, the new iPhone 7 comes with Apple A10 Fusion chipset, a quad-core CPU that Apple claims is 40% faster than the iPhone 6s. Both models come with only 2GB RAM but it’s almost certain that they will still top the list of this year’s fastest devices.

The iPhone 6s still has a formidable position on the list of top ten fastest phone in the market, an iPhone 7 that delivers 40% faster CPU performance and up to 50% faster graphics performance will definitely be the new benchmark with which other devices are compared.

Storage

Apple has finally gotten rid of the 16GB memory option, iPhone 7 starts at 32GB. There’s are also 128GB and 256GB options. As for the Jet Black color, it is only 128GB and 256GB storage options.

Camera

This is probably the biggest thing about the iPhone 7. The smaller iPhone 7 comes with a single 12MP camera while the bigger iPhone 7 Plus has a dual 12MP camera setup at the back. There’s a slight bulge many find offensive. A larger f/1.8 aperture that allows more light will improve low-light photography and produce clearer images.

The front camera on both models too have been upgraded with a 7MP shooter.

The iPhone 7 Plus dual camera isn’t actually new–it goes all the way back to HTC One M8 but the technology has improved over the years. The iPhone 7 Plus camera setup consists of a 12MP wide-angle and a 2x telephoto lens. The camera lets you do optical image zoom up to 2x. You can still zoom up to 10x but anything from 3x switches to digital zoom.

As with devices with similar camera setup (LG G5, Huawei P9), you can shoot images with bokeh effect. Both models come with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and quad-LED true-tone flash.

Pricing & availability in Nigeria

The 4.7-inch iPhone 7 starts at $649 while the 5.5-inch model starts at $749, with price increasing based on storage option. Pre-order starts on September 9 and the device starts shipping on September 16.

When the phone finally becomes available in Nigeria, you can expect the price to go as high as ₦350,000.
